How sweepstakes casinos work

Two separate currencies run every one of these sites. Understanding the difference is the whole thing — almost every misunderstanding about the model comes from treating them as one.

Gold Coins

The play-for-fun currency. You can buy Gold Coin packages, win more of them, and play games with them. They have no monetary value, cannot be exchanged for cash or prizes, and cannot be withdrawn. Buying them is buying entertainment, nothing else.

Sweepstakes Coins

The promotional entry currency. These cannot be purchased directly. They arrive free — bundled with Gold Coin purchases, given out as daily bonuses, or requested by post. Play them through, and the balance may be redeemed subject to the operator’s rules.

The free entry route

Because Sweepstakes Coins are the currency that can lead to a prize, and because they are never sold, every legitimate operator must provide a way to obtain them without spending anything. This is the Alternative Method of Entry, and it is why these promotions carry the phrase no purchase necessary.

In practice it takes two forms: a daily login or social bonus, and a written postal request. The postal route has specific formatting requirements and a cap on how many requests you may send in a period. Both are set out in each operator’s official rules, and both are free.

Buying a Gold Coin package does not improve your odds. It buys Gold Coins; the Sweepstakes Coins that come with it are a promotional bonus attached to the sale.

Redemption

Turning Sweepstakes Coins into a prize is not instant and is not automatic. Operators generally require all of the following, and the specifics differ by site:

Playthrough — coins must be played at least once before the balance is eligible.
A minimum balance — below the threshold, you cannot redeem at all.
Identity verification — government ID and proof of address, checked before a first redemption is released.
An eligible location and age — verified at redemption, not only at signup.

Processing time after approval varies from hours to several business days depending on the payout method.
